Big Deal Professional Development
We prioritise professional development for young emerging artists. Thanks to funding from the Esmee Fairburn Foundation we offer industry-standard training in performing arts and professional practice. The training is delivered by our artists in residence along with visiting practitioners and arts leaders. Artists who train with us will expand their practice as artists as well as developing showreels, audition technique, communication and networking skills. Our young people have gone on to study at Urdang London, London Studio Centre, Laban, Middlesex University, Brunel University, Anglia Ruskin University and the Brit School, and performed with Alvin Ailey Company, Boy Blue Entertainment, IMD Legion, Rhythms of The City and Ellie Goulding.
Big Deal Professional Development Alumni
Brian is a 23-year old musician from East London. Brian joined Big Deal open access summer project in 2005 along with a group of friends from school and steadily developed an existing skill in music performance as a drummer. In 2006 we encouraged and supported Brian to experiment with rap and music production and he found a natural ability to tell stories through song and create complex digital musical compositions. Brian worked with our music professionals to record albums of his work, and performed live at a range of London venues as part of his training with us. Brian went on to study music at City University and whilst there he joined ‘Rhythms of the City’, an internationally acclaimed Samba band. With Rhythms of the City Brian played at the 2012 Olympics closing ceremony and toured Brazil, and also played for Ellie Goulding at the 2014 Brit Awards. Brian is still involved with Big Deal, and regularly performs at our live events and mentors younger aspiring musicians on our programme.
Olivia is a 19-year old dancer from Dagenham. Olivia came to our attention as a gifted young dancer when she joined our open access summer programme in 2009. Olivia trained with our Big Deal professional development dance company from 2009 to 2013 and was part of the Big Deal team who represented England in the World Hiphop Championships in 2012, placing 7th in the world rankings. Olivia is now dancing for the UK’s foremost hiphop dance company, Boy Blue Entertainment, and recently performed with Boy Blue in their new piece to close the 2015 Breakin’ Convention at Sadler’s Wells.
