Studio 3 Arts present – Hugh Cunningham: The Calais Jungle. A study of the new Life found by refugees living in the Calais Refugee Camp
Gallery Exhibition 06th June – 24th June
Private View (Open to the public) – 10th June, 5.30pm - 8.30pm
Boundary Road Gallery
From the 6th of June, Studio 3 Art’s Boundary Road Gallery present Hugh’s collection of portraits and reportage photography, taken recently within the refugee camp in Calais. Studio 3 Arts are proud to showcase and share these important images and stories with our community as part of Refugee Week (20-26 June).
Hugh is a photographer interested in reportage and documentary work. He is currently completing a postgraduate photography diploma coupled with his English literature (degree) background he has always shown interest in recording stories and exploring unique human situations.
This project is the result of several months of photographing and interacting with the individuals inhabiting the so-called “Jungle” refugee camp on the outskirts of the Port of Calais. The work is intended to highlight the poor conditions of the camp but more importantly, to humanise the refugees. “Often presented negatively in the media, migrants are often reduced to depersonalised statistics and referred to as swarms. By combining portraits and giving the refugees the opportunity to write about and share their experiences, it is my hope that viewers will gain a new, more humanistic, view of the greatest social issue of our time.” - Hugh Cunningham
The Boundary Road Gallery is a welcoming space open to all visitors, we encourage local Barking and Dagenham residents to take advantage of experiencing and exploring artwork, no matter what art experience you have. Come along during June to see this outstanding diverse collection of portraits.
Refugee Week is an umbrella festival, with nationwide events held by a wide range of arts, voluntary, faith and refugee community organisations, schools, student groups and more. Refugee Week aims to provide an important opportunity for asylum seekers and refugees to be seen, listened to and valued.
