Open Estate - Living Museum
Studio 3 Arts are pleased to announce that our prestigious Open Estate project, funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund, has a new home in the heart of the Gascoigne Estate. Over the next six months Open Estate will be developing a Living Museum at 129A St Marys Parade.
Conveniently placed next to the popular chip shop, our Living Museum is a welcoming and creative space, where the Gascoigne community will support one another to share and celebrate their experiences on living on the estate.
Over the duration of the residency, Gascoigne residents and Studio 3 Arts artists will be transforming this once empty shop into a space to showcase a collection of beautiful artefacts, precious stories and archived treasures created and given to us from across Gascoigne's diverse community and 50 year-long history. Together we aim to uncover the estate's rich history during this period of change and regeneration and share precious stories from generations of individuals and families to make sure they don't disappear.
This exciting project is aimed at anyone with a connection to Gascoigne Estate, Barking - people who currently live here, those who lived here in the past, and people who worked, went to school or socialised here.
If you are interested in Open Estate, here are some of the ways to get involved and support the project and help the living museum to flourish:
- Do you know the Gascoigne estate and are you interested in volunteering on the project? You can play a crucial role by collecting stories from residents for the national archive. In return we will support you with professional training, pay your expenses and will work flexibly around your other commitments.
- Have you got a story to tell about living, working, playing or growing up on the estate or know someone who might? We would love to talk to you!
- Have you got any objects, memorabilia or photos from your time living on the Gascoigne, that you would like to share or lend to our Living Museum?
This is a wonderful opportunity for the Gascoigne community to have their experiences and ambitions of the area celebrated in a collection of beautiful artworks as well as have their memories captured in a national archive, which will culminate in a festival of the project in Autumn 2016.
Open Estate is a place where everyone is welcome, whether just dropping in or staying a little longer to take part in one of our arts workshops or heritage interviews. There is always a cup of tea waiting for you at the Open Estate Living Museum.
