Big deal and Studio arts 3 presented a wonderful show called ‘I’m not slippin I’m just livin’ with a bag of talents with no boundaries whatsoever. This was held at The Broadway in Barking on Friday 28th and Saturday 29th October 2011 at 7.30.
Liza had given me a wonderful opportunity to help out backstage with all the performers, while being backstage I was able to meet all the performers which was very nice. Being backstage I had an insight on how the sound effects worked, how special effects worked and how the performers had prepared themselves for their next act etc.
I really liked the fact that the audience were not just children and young adults but also adults which was very good to know that people from other areas had heard about the show and were willing to come and watch the talents that were being offered out to the audience.
The main message for the ‘I’m not slippin I’m jus livin’ show was to make people aware about what goes on around us such as the riots etc and how it hasn’t only just affected society on its own but also individuals as well however they still have to go about their daily lives. This was really good to see because even though they are stereotyped they still had and have the courage to be bold and say that even though other youths may be ruining our society we are trying to make it better so please don’t see us as a whole. Many youths today have been accused and knocked down by the stories produced by the media giving them a bad name.
Before seeing the show I was not aware about the main reasons for the show. When watching the show I started to gain an understanding about the show and what message the group wanted to put across to its audience. The show was presented and done in a way that was very understandable meaning that the audience would not have had any questions about the show but only left an effect on them which is only to think about which path they would pick as an individual which was to follow the crowd and be a statistic or do the correct thing and stay out of trouble.
I was pleased with the show and the outcome on the first day and recommended it from friends from other areas. They were amazed by the show due to not having an opportunity like that in their areas.
My friend also left a message for the group;
I loved every bit of the show, it was amazing. They all need to be signed. All the acts were wonderful and surprising, the thought of them thinking of all of the acts on their own is mind blowing, I wish I could be part of them. I am definitely coming to next show and I am bringing more friends.
Well done guys, keep it up!

A group of many talented young individuals doing what they do best whether it’s singing; dancing, poetry, acting etc they’ve got it. This inculdes all types of genres such as hip hop, streetdance, grime, dubstep and many more.
Their talents have no boundaries and is simply wonderful. This group allows young talented people to come together as one and show off their talents while feeling proud to see what they can achieve.
The target audience is very open, mainly directed at young talented people who are interested in such arts however Big Deal delivers amazing, extraordinary talents to attract youths that are not interested in such arts. Big Deal also directs at adults giving them a broad and deeper seeing into the youth talents and ability.
Whilst amongst the audience watching the preview of the final show which will be performed on 28th and 29th of October 2011, i was blown away by the confidence, talents and emotion of each performer. Although there are many other young talented people waiting to be discovered, Big Deal along with other co artists delivered something new.
The purpose of the show was just a t-shirt launch labelled ‘I’m not slipping i’m just living’ designed by Khanillion (aimed to give youth an insight to be among others habitats feeling safe). The main purpose was also to give other talented people confidence to show them that they can do what they have interest in hence The Big deal performing company are still looking for more talented young people to join the Big Deal dance, acting and singing crew to discover, show off and develop their talents.
At the beginning of the show, I honestly didn’t know what to expect, however as each artist performed the level of talent and ability increased. All performances enabled me to see other sides of youth that we as a society don’t usually get to see.
I really enjoyed every minute of the show, the energy that was given was amazing you could feel how much everyone wanted to aspire to become someone big which is very uplifting.
Its unfortunate as the public tend to underestimate the talents of the youths but what I had seen could suprise anyone. I highly recommend everyone to support these young talented people at Big Deal’s 11th annual event, ‘I’m Not Slippin, I’m Just Livin’. On Friday the 28th and Saturday 29th October 2011, 7.30pm at The Broadway Theatre, Barking.
Tickets are £5 which are available from the box office for more information call 020 8507 5607 or email http://www.thebroadwaybarking.com

its just a breath.
one in, one out
the kind of feeling to do anything like no-ones around
that massage u wish u had after a long day
that moment of jumping in bed after living in coldness
maybe the moment of jumping in a cold pool after a heated hour
the feeling of being recognised from having no power
its just a breath.
a release of every weight on your shoulder
an escape from that emotional prison you’ve been waiting to leave
maybe the success of all you’ve wanted to achieve
it’s actually just a breath
one in, one out
the ability to prove you’re the ‘I’ in happiness
to look rough but feel your best
maybe just that feeling of relaxation
no-one to compete with
nothing to hide from
no deadlines to meet
just feeling free…
experiencing something new
experiencing drama
experiencing Big Deal.

We stand united today as representatives of our diverse borough to condemn the actions of a very small group of people who have attacked our community.
We know that people in our borough will be outraged by what happened last night and will have no truck with those who wish to loot shops, vandalise streets and create fear.
We know that the majority of our young people are law abiding and do not condone the actions of those involved in the disturbances.
We unite together to call on anyone with information that could assist the Police to pass on that information - in confidence if needed. There can and should be no protection for those who damage our community.
We request that people follow the instructions of the Police and Council staff where necessary.
We are grateful for the hard work of the Police and the Fire Service in very difficult circumstances and pay tribute to those staff in the Council, voluntary groups and youth workers who continue to help keep our community together.
We will not allow our borough to be spoiled by the activity of a small minority. We are proud of Barking & Dagenham.
If you have information, please dial the Police on 101 or call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 in confidence.

Although I have only had three days of work experience this week, I have gotten a taste of office work, teamwork and a great chance to see actors my age (and above) to perform in front of an important audience. The purpose of the performance was to introduce the new Street Base cards to young people and parents by explaining its advantages in a fun and light hearted way. The rehearsals were fun and took place in Studio 3 Arts with the performance taking place at All Saints lower school.
I was introduced to Liza, who introduced me to the four actors Brian (playing the unhealthy friend with an overactive appetite), John (playing the joker), Ade (playing the boffin) and Edward aka Ed (playing the plotter). They played as four All Saints school friends giving the audience an insight on what Street Base cards are really about and why we should have them. I was impressed how they were very professional and managed to take on all of Liza’s advice and directing immediately.
I enjoyed how the act began as the four boys sat as part of the audience and began to interrupt the silenced assembly with their loud conversation by telling Brian to stop eating his crisps in assembly. As John joked about Brian’s cheesy Doritos breath and encouraged him to eat more healthily, Ade and Ed managed to intertwine the importance of Street Base cards offering the school and parents greater beneficial funds. Sometimes though they let their imagination run with Ade’s idea of being able to fund a water theme park for the school, a whisk for Brian’s fluffy cake baking and a new set of creps worth £1500 for Ed!
They also managed to introduce the school choir, a Street Base representative and the headmaster at the end of each mini performance they made. My favourite part of the act was Brian’s remix of Marvin Gay’s famous song to ‘Edible Healing’ (obviously about his love for food) and John’s humour throughout the performances. I think the performance was outstanding and managed to entertain all of the age groups in the audience including the headmaster of All Saints secondary school.
As an A Level student on work experience at Studio 3 arts I’ve learnt and gained many skills needed in a creative workforce.
I understand Studio 3 Arts to be a very dynamic unique environment engaging with all types of people of different abilities.
As an inspiring educational psychologist, Studio 3 Arts has given me an insight of what it would be like to work in a delicate environment whilst encouraging individuals to explore new things.
Working in Studio 3 Arts has been a memorable and beneficial experience.
The first time I came and worked here, which was for my year ten work experience, I did a lot of office work and become part of the postal service (the delivery to be specific), but I also took part in the amazing work shops that studio 3 runs, they are really just open to interpretation of the participant and truly have no limits.
I don’t ever remember a time where I didn’t like or feel uncomfortable working for studio 3 and this is the second time I have applied to have my work experience at studio 3 arts (being in sixth form/year 12) and this time round…
Nothing has changed! I enjoy everything even more than I did last time. I really cant exaggerate how fun it is to work here, You know that feeling where you don’t want to get out of bed? Well if you ever get the chance to work here, you’ll say goodbye to that feeling. Now obviously not every day will be amazingly fantastic, but the other days are never far off it!
Hope this was helpful ☺

Being a photographer at an exciting live event is no easy task. With amazing up and coming Grime artists, Point.3, Unique Individualz, Sharkz, Dope Boyz and Stone Cold performing alongside Barking’s finest singers such as Tiffany Brown, Zahrah Anderson and Rebecca Francis; getting a chance to sit down was not possible. With high energy Grime anthems to slow yet inspirational RnB music playing, a range of styles and genres were expressed and played, with faithful friends, fans and family attending and lending support and being passive Hypewo/men-Monday at the the Queen’s Theatre was the epitome of LIVE.
Stone Cold set us off with Hard grime beats with thumping base lines which could be felt from a mile away, mixed with entertaining crowd control techniques and high energy lyrics and on stage performances. Their members amazed us with their flow and their comfort on stage-They were born Performers.
Unique Individualz were instantly recognizable once on stage, with the memorable artists: K.Dot and Tragic blowing us away with hard-hitting and rhythmic lyrics and verses riddled with pulsating syllables, literally pumping the audience with their stylistic bars-Gifted and Endowed with Great Talent
Sharkz was also an instantly recognizable performer, appearing at the Fly Concepts: Open Mic event on April Fools Day which was an immediate success. His appeal came from his perfectly timed and well-delivered verses, which are streamed with lyrical content comparable to long time artists such as Ghetts or Skepta-He NEEDS to get signed.
Dope Boyz were favourable performers on stage, with their catchy and popular song “Rock Em Out” which had many of the audience on their feet dancing to the catchy hook and being amazed by their stage presence and being influenced by the popular dance “Jerking”. I also personally enjoyed this group and was amazed at how much talent Barking has within its humble streets-A Highly Prized Young Group.
Point.3 were already revered artists further enhanced by their performances at Studio3 Arts on April fools day and are now heavily respected for their high energy stage presence and thumping crowd favourite tunes demonstrated once again at the Queens Theatre. Their flow is remarkable and is balanced by their lyrical content, and shows how professional and great their talent is-A Guaranteed Success.
Tiffany Brown is a very talented performer who doesn’t just excel in singing but also has hidden talent in rapping and performed alongside Young Scarz and Unique Individualz, and blew me away with her lyrics and aggressive style of rapping on the Mic. Her singing was fantastic and was well co-ordinated with the other artists on stage. Her presence on stage was felt by the crowd and was embraced by her friends and is now shaping her to be a very well respected performer-She makes Barking Proud.
Zahrah Anderson is an excellent singer with an angelic voice, which turned heads of the audience. This young lady has strong vocals and could sing challenging songs such as Rihanna’s “Umbrella” note for note, perfectly. Her talent is remarkable and possesses a strong yet gentle voice, which is an innate quality of the most talented singers-She, is an Incredibly Gifted Young Lady.
Rebecca Francis is an incredible singer of outstanding talent. She has the stage presence of a professional and sings her heart out in any performance. She dazzled the audience with her vocals, which incorporate the strength of a well-experienced singer, (i.e: Beyonce) and hyped up the crowd by hitting and sustaining a “Michael Jackson note”. She is a fantastic performer and would be an iconic figure in the music industry-Her Talent is Too Good to Miss.
Studio 3 Arts is thrilled, proud and humbled to remain an Arts Council England-funded organisation. The ACE grant will underpin and strengthen our core portfolio of programmes and enable us to maximise the reach and impact of our work.
The ACE funding evaluation of Studio 3 Arts remarked that the organisation has “a history of performing successfully against each programme strand outlined in its business plan, and is well resourced to meet objectives. It is resilient and responsive to external factors, successfully striking up strategic partnerships to deliver against artistic and social objectives, and to lever in funds in a mission-focused manner.”
Being in the big deal dance company has overall been a really good experience. Starting in late 2009, it wasn’t long till we found ourselves being entered into our first competition ‘Freshen up a fairytale’. We learnt different styles of dance from old school and new school street to contemporary incorporating all styles into one piece. We didn’t win, but that just gave the group the courage to keep on going.
Rehearsing every Thursday for 3 hours we trained hard and improved our dance knowledge by continuing to learn different styles of street as well as the different techniques of each style. Within the first few months of starting out in the group, free styling was something that I knew I would struggle on. We spent lessons on freeing our own style and performing whilst doing it and now I can admit that I’ve become more confident with experimenting new things and not dancing because I was told to but because I have a reason or a story behind my movement. We also got to understand what dance is and that dance comes from the core of your body and everything else around it is classed as an accessory for example your arms and legs.
With the few months of training three new members were added to the group and we were rehearsing working up to our 2nd competition ‘ Essex street dance championships’. Tashan choreographed a new set which successfully got us taking first place out of our category. In addition to that members from the big deal dance company took 1st place in both duo categories 16+ and 16- and taking 1st and 2nd place in the solos 16- category. This boosted our confidence and our drive to becoming a successful group was still going to carry on from there.
Our training continued and we were entered into more competitions and performing at shows trying to get the big deal name out there. Throughout 2010 a lot has happened and it has been a joy ride experience being involved in many dance shows and events.
At the end of 2010 a new set was created inspired by Michael Jackson. Personally I feel that the MJ set was the most challenging of them all. It had to be on point because that would just be disrespect to Michael Jackson if it weren’t. Tashan pushed the group and with that set alone, the big deal dance company have improved a lot, especially with our performance skills. With this set we have become more memorable and the result of this being many people have asked us to perform at their events.
Big deal teaches you a lot of things. In my personal experiences I have learnt how to pick up routines quicker, freestyle with confidence and learnt how to perform to an audience no matter how big or small the audience may be. And dance is not just movement to counts of a song its so much more than that and I don’t think you realise how much more there is to dance until you’re actually doing it. But it’s not all nice as I have realised dance can be very stressful and frustrating. I have noticed about myself my attitude towards things as I struggle to do which can be bad so in future I’m going to remember to be patient, and that I’m not going to be good at everything, and things take time to improve so being patient is very important.
Last night we launched this, the new website. Some of our volunteers had the first look at it and we had some wonderful feedback.
